The Olympic theme was a tough challenge, so full credit to all the artists, who took part, in this year’s Watford Live! Richard Harrington Challenge Cup for art.
The entries went on show at Watford Museum at the start of the month-long festival and visitors were invited to do the judging.
The ballot box was only opened in time for the prize presentation and reception on Saturday (June 30), so there was a genuine buzz and air of excitement when the winners were announced by chairman of Watford Area Arts Forum, John Dowdle.
Oxhey artist Frances Geraghty’s mixed media Flying the Flag secured the elegant Art Deco trophy for its creator, who showed genuine delight and surprise, when her name was called out.
Runner-up, Don Lanstone, missed his “moment” by being away on the day. His photographic interpretation, Watford in the Year of the Olympics, shows a collage of picturesque vistas of the town.
Lots of ingenuity had gone into dealing with the topic and third prize winner, Anthony Wildig, admitted he was slightly uncertain about his watercolour Mount Olympus, site of the original games, being a wise choice, the way the area hit the news just before he submitted his work!
